As you mentioned earlier, I updated and logged out, logged back in, played the game, but I still don't see events and items!

Sometimes, it takes for us to play a couple of levels for the events to be triggered! Hence, I would request you to play 1 or 2 levels (old levels are fine) and try to lose it. Then, you should see the pop-up of the current event(s) - that you will lose the progress if you lose the level.
Now, quit the level and go back to map screen and events. You should be able to see the events there🤞
