I’m struggling with the update. I’m somewhere in the 11k levels and used to receive new lives from friends daily now it’s been weeks and still not one. What happened?

Mostly what has happened is that King removed the level rankings from the bottom of the board. The level ranking (your friends score for the level) also included the Send Lives button. This was an easy way to send lives to a lot of your friends with one press of a button. Now that this option has been removed people have to send lives one by one using the friends list of their game's features. This seems to be unpopular and people have just stopped sending lives.
Also the introduction of the Player Card means that some people can't have lives sent to them now unless they request them.
