I keep asking for friends by ticking the boxes but only have 2

This is normal as most players either don't bother with making friends or may even have stopped playing. I have found that the best way to make lots of friends in the game is to keep inviting others on the map. Tap on their player profiles which should show if they are active and if they tend to give lives to others. The more you invite the more chance that a few will respond to your invite. Yes, it can be hard to make friends early on in the game but eventually you will get more replies.
