Difference between zero lives and one life

has anyone else noticed this as odd? Here goes;
you have no lives remaining so you gotta win this round/episode or you’re done for a while. you win that round, yippee, you get to proceed to next round, you somehow earn a free life, so you think sweet, I now have two chances at the next episode… BUT you play the next round and you lose. you don’t actually get to use your free life at all? Your play ends there. But what about the free life the game just gave you?? So what’s the point of having earned a free life if during the next round you lose and you are done. you don’t get to try again? You would have been done without the free life so It’s like it was a fake life??? Anyone else see this? Make sense??
