I am sorry to hear about the issue in your game! I have heard few complaints about this issue, but it has been a while!
On your MacBook, are you playing the App version or on Safari?
I do not see any "Update" button next to Play Games. The cog only changes notifications. I am beyond frustrated at this point. And yes, I am plaing on a new MacBook; I can still play on my IPad and phone but prefer the desktop.

I am sorry to read that you cannot access CCS via Facebook. I do play via Facebook too, and although this is not the most user friendly platform, I still have access to it.
You mention that you used to be able to play on your MacBook. Did you change device recently ? Or do you remember having changed the gaming parameters on Facebook (maybe inadvertantly via a pop up screen)? By choosing "non social" gaming, this would have disabled you to play any King game on Facebook.
I would suggest that you verify your selected gaming parameters by visiting Facebook settings page on a desktop, then follow these steps ⤵️:
