New game, new Candy Crush?

I must share this new test game I have just started. It's really different from all I have seen before and probably is geared towards training players to use gold and boosters right from the start.

Free starting boosters appeared after about 3 or 4 levels. Two free UFOs and the demo were added at level 13:

and two party poppers at level 17!

When I reopened the game the next day, I got the 2 UFOs again on my first level played. This was level 51, the start of the first episode race. There was no sign of a win streak in this game. (It usually starts at the same time as the episode race if I am not mistaken)

May I ask what you mean by updating all the pre 200 to order levels @SirPyroOfLight ? These were all familiar old versions of the levels I played, I mean the ones that have been around for years, at least since 2021.

Is that why these two games were indeed so brutally slow for me?

By the way, my Allium game had the marshmallow and order locks version but now I've checked they have reverted back to the normal old levels as well. King might have heard your complaints!

I suspected they would at 200 as that was the normal level for the "proper" bag. Might be why they updated all the pre 200 to order levels as the old ones would have been brutally slow otherwise.

Yippee! Both win streak and super charger have shown up in both my games at level 201. Nicely in tandem, so I could finally test out if the super charger really makes any difference.

I've made it to level 200 and am taking a break now. I was hoping to find an account with the new gold limit of 200, but so far no sign and I have over 400 gold.

It's been gruelling. What I have found most annoying is that even playing boosters would not get me past some of these levels. I played a party popper with four moves remaining and still failed the level! Can that be real, at level 195? On other levels I just never got even close enough to see that a UFO would help. This is before even reaching level 200 and on several attempts. Of course I could have spent some gold, but where is the fun and the satisfaction in that? And what is the point of boosters if they don't actually help pass these levels?

I honestly think this game is confused. I was hoping to make it to level 200 and I get this pop-up:

Under level 5? Who is not playing past level 5 and wants a friend? That is bizarre.

I don't pay much attention to friends requests since I feel I have enough to cope with, given that we can't send lives to more than one at a time. It's too much tapping for my fingers. I've just checked and there were three friends requests for Cornflower. I ticked them so we'll see if King find some more for me. On the new games above the "players at a similar level" is a section "players who send lives" as well. I asked those to befriend me this morning, but none have done so yet. It's not always accurate though if I look at their player cards, some have given none in the past week. Given how generous you are with lives I am surprised you do not get more requests!

I have also noted that all of the friends suggestions in the game of players at a similar level are players who have apparently given up playing!

My game doesn't have the 'friends at similar levels' option anymore. All I have is the copy friends link to share option.

Do you receive many friends requests? For the last two weeks all I have received are requests from players below level 5. How do they even find me to send me a request!

Slowly approaching level 200 with my two almost identical test games. Slowly because without the win streak boosters these two accounts are like wading through mud, very, very tedious. The game gave both devices one and a half hour of colour bombs, which was nice and did help with some levels.

Both accounts do not have enough starting boosters to use them on all levels. Both failed Factory Frenzy on the first two occasions, probably because the lowest levels just do not provide enough striped candies. The number required to win the prize seems almost identical in all versions of Factory Frenzy at about 220 striped per half hour.

The main difference between the two games is that one has the Bakers Box and the other this horribly pointless one:

This gives you one single colour bomb for passing 12 levels!

The other difference is that the iPad gets the Daily Win and the iPhone has the Daily Stamp. (These events may seem the same to some people but I definitely know which one I prefer)

The iPhone has the new chocolate box and the iPad has the old one.

Otherwise the two games are very similar. The level difficulty is almost identical. It is too hard for anyone playing without boosters.

There are two distinct types of algorithm I can note: The old one that is based on special candies and combos or special candies and the new one that is predominantly fish based. Identical levels can have either the pescatory or old fashioned lucky board version and this may swap over on further attempts. There is some overlap but I can now recognise the distinct difference of the new algorithms compared to the old. The finish of each level (which may be with many moves remaining) is usually pescatory and it seems to be quicker and often be contained in just two moves. Everything about the game is being simplified and stream-lined.

It may be that King are sacrificing new starters this week for the sake of tweaking the "without boosters" algorithms. Neither of my games has a win streak. Out of five new games I started this month only one had the win streak start together with the episode race at level 51. Is this normal or an error? Can you help me on this @SirPyroOfLight ? Is there another point at which the win streak may make an appearance?

I have also noted that all of the friends suggestions in the game ( players at a similar level ) are players who have apparently given up playing! About one third of all the other players on the map have also not played for at least a day.

We are not seeing many posts from true newbies about any of this. Maybe they just give up?

Oh and by the way I forgot to mention: I got the last dragon glitch as early as level 89:

You can't actually see it as the dragon is sitting above the left most shute, obscured by the banner, but I had happily set off a fish to remove the last frosting, which was in fact clearly the winning move the game wanted me to make and this is what I got!

To prove the point I paid 10 gold and the dragon of course dropped with no move having been made.

I complained to Kingsley and had a long chat with the result of creating a ticket for me with player support. I'm still waiting for the email though. I guess they are too busy with the Alien Invasion complaints….

Episode 111 - 125!

Oh dear, oh dear, I've reached the Episode from Hell again, but this time I've got two games to compare and am going to stick it through. This version of the game without the win streak is terrible. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind this is, but it must be a test on how these levels behave with no boosters. Well, I can tell you that: They stink! This whole episode is full of impossible levels and anyone who approaches this episode as a true newbie will spend all their gold and have nothing when they get to level 200. King please note: There is just no way players will get addicted to the game this quickly. This is a truly bad decision, and they don't need to do any testing, they just need to ask the players. This version of the game stinks! You have to let the players win these levels while they still have a life left! No one below level 200 will have any lives from friends. So surely when all the lives and all the gold is gone anyone with any common sense will just …… uninstall? This will just cause everyone to drop out, surely?

Looking forward to November then! I agree, the old familiar levels are much more enjoyable. So are the old algorithms. I hope they'll stick with them. Players just love cascades. I think these new algorithms are doing away with cascades: It's either a two move finish with the help of the fish or a slow long drawn out affair with a fish finish at the end. The new algorithms do not give us the feeling of achievement or agency. It makes players feel like spectators and puppets. If King bothered to take note of player feedback from us in the community they wouldn't have to do all this testing. We can tell them what makes players quit the game prematurely. That marshmallow/order lock version certainly does: It's unbearable.

Haha ya gonna give it another kick in Nov. See if they have finalized the testing. I hope they do not go with the order locks or at least make them a little more complex, they basically were almost meaningless as they lined up with the natural clearing of the board.

The two games are quite enlightening. There are clearly two types of algorithms: the old familiar lucky boards where we pass by creating special candies and combos of wrap + stripe and the new fish based ones.

Level 74:

iPhone:

fish + wrap combo at 25 moves remaining

fish + stripe combo at 18 moves

wrap +stripe combo at 16 moves

fish + stripe combo at 13 moves remaining and finish the level

These moves were mostly hinted, but also the best available on the board.

iPad:

wrap + stripe combo at 26 moves remaining

wrap + stripe combo at 22 moves

colour bomb created at 20 moves

finish with 17 moves remaining

This was following the rules of creating special candies and making the best possible moves available, felt like an old fashioned lucky board

I think King are testing out the new AI written algorithms and how they perform against the old ones. Personally I find the new ones stodgy and unpleasant. Nowhere near as satisfying as the old ones. (If the first suggested move is to create a fish it rings alarm bells in me.)

September 20th 2025 and I have started two brand new games (again). Both seem almost identical, which is what I was hoping for. I wonder if this is because King have simplified the game structure again. Whatever the reason, my two games differ in these features:

Game 1 (iPhone) has the daily stamp and was given starting boosters early and UFOs and Party Popper early. Level 59 I failed more than five times and then passed using one of those prematurely given party poppers.

Game 2 (iPad) has the daily win and normal appearance of boosters

One level so far is different: level 54 differs between the two games. Different boards.

Events are so far identical.

Both games are seeing the episode race with a starting reward of 25 gold. Neither game is seeing the win streak yet. Alien invasion starts at level 80.

Both games the weekly contest has just started and both have completely identical opponents! All seven of them identical!

The only difference is my score. I am at level 71 in both games, so in the second game all levels seem to have been counted as double (being the weekend) but in the other game some of the levels only count double, no idea why this is.

Both games the daily treat machine has just triggered on reload and both get the 5 mins UFO as a first gift.

To be quite honest @cookiemae I quite enjoy this new game at this point. In fact these levels are more interesting to play than the other version of starter levels (the boring ones with the marshmallow and the order locks that Pyro was stuck with). These older algorithms are better. If Candy Crush is now a gold budgeting game, then I am happy to let that be the aim and the strategy for me. I have over 500 gold at level 300 now. That is certainly enough to make this a valid strategy to enjoy. It is the boredom of innately boring levels that I hate so much and my previous game had those, so I quit early on. I hope King will keep these older levels in the game. There appear to be two test groups at the moment.

@christinewupp Just looking at this feed it seems like this game has really changed since I started playing years ago. These lower levels were very easy to pass. I can't believe now that you are using your gold for such a low level. It's amazing.

This game is becoming more and more interesting!

Now, as of today, Saturday September 6th, all level labels have disappeared.

The old original legendary level 225. I approached it with three super charger colour bombs. This is the outcome on my first attempt:

So it's still impossible on your first attempt, regardless of what boosters you play. It had been looking very promising along the way:

I am pretty sure I made all the best available moves from here on, but one wrap+stripe combo (which quite possibly would have been the winner in the original algorithm) blew up on me. This screams "fixed" at you. Apparently the fishes are making sure players will stay one move/jelly short at the end, and it does illustrate beautifully the "last few moves" algorithm that there now is. The middle part of the level is a separate algorithm, and very much the old one, but the last five or so moves the jelly fish appear, take over and decide the outcome of the level!

I paid to pass on my third attempt. (in fact I had meant to pay to keep the super charger but forgot!)

Level 228 I also paid to pass on a subsequent attempt.

Level 229 I passed after the fishing boat showed up, the first time in this game (I had gone down to 0 lives a few times previously, but no fishing boat appeared until I hit this episode today)

Level 230 absolutely hopeless. Here a reminder of that board:

You need a lucky board here and it's a notorious level. I got nowhere near close to so paid my way out of it.

I received 40 gold from the "elite" version of the champions race. I spent 30 gold on the episode. Profit: 10 gold. By the way I had a timed colour bomb from the daily treat machine to last the entire episode (1 hour)

So the conclusion:

Candy Crush is a gold budgeting game.

The jelly fish determine the outcome of each level.

Players must spend gold and boosters wisely in order to successfully play this game. The game determines the amount of gold that can be won without cheating.

I am only up to level 156 so far, taking it slowly so far. Now I have noted a lot of changes in the algorithms. @SirPyroOfLight I do wish you might give the testing another go, because I am having such an interesting time here. I have the old levels from (I think) 51 onwards. And these are fascinating me since the levels look so familiar, but play differently. There is so much to study. There are definitely new winning and losing algorithms which have just been created and involve the jelly fish. These are distinct from the old algorithms, which many of these levels still have. I have also noted some that switch from the old to the new win/lose algorithms in the last five or so moves.

This latest episode has actually been enjoyable to play!

I note that the first legendary level is now level 147. I managed to pass it using the three starting boosters and avoiding to make any matches involving jelly fish. This way I had the old algorithm, luck plus strategy and passed on my final move.

The "super hard" levels of the episode I also found easy to pass with just starting boosters.

This episode was fun! But to get the fun versions I definitely tried to avoid the jelly fish. I turned off hints as well now because the hints just want me to make jelly fish all the time!

Those days might be over. In my second test game I also get the same free boosters as I got in the first, though at slightly different times. This time the win streak showed up together with the episode race like usual (maybe the lack of a win streak in my first game was a glitch), so I made it to level 72 until I got blocked. Then again at level 75. When the daily treat machine showed up I got 5 minutes UFO! That was at level 72 after losing all my five lives. So this new version is definitely trying to train players into using boosters.

Moreover, the algorithms are new. The levels look identical to the familiar ones, but the algorithms for the pass/fail/near miss trilogy are brand new. These first two episode races are just a jelly fish bonanza. This new version of Candy Crush wants us to use boosters and it wants us to create and use jelly fish. Cascades and old fashioned combos are out, jelly fish are in. Either the fish will get those last few jellies or frostings in the last few moves, or they will leave you one jelly short.

Not much fun, but I'll stick it with this one for now so I can see how things develop and if I get a gold bar cap.

The middle part of the level is a separate algorithm, and very much the old one, but the last five or so moves the jelly fish appear, take over and decide the outcome of the level!

I paid to pass on my third attempt. (in fact I had meant to pay to keep the super charger but forgot!)

Level 228 I also paid to pass on a subsequent attempt.

Level 229 I passed after the fishing boat showed up, the first time in this game (I had gone down to 0 lives a few times previously, but no fishing boat appeared until I hit this episode today)

Level 230 absolutely hopeless. Here a reminder of that board:

You need a lucky board here and it's a notorious level. I got nowhere near close to so paid my way out of it.

I received 40 gold from the "elite" version of the champions race. I spent 30 gold on the episode. Profit: 10 gold. By the way I had a timed colour bomb from the daily treat machine to last the entire episode (1 hour)

So the conclusion:

Candy Crush is a gold budgeting game.

The jelly fish determine the outcome of each level.

Players must spend gold and boosters wisely in order to successfully play this game. The game determines the amount of gold that can be won without cheating.

I am only up to level 156 so far, taking it slowly so far. Now I have noted a lot of changes in the algorithms. @SirPyroOfLight I do wish you might give the testing another go, because I am having such an interesting time here. I have the old levels from (I think) 51 onwards. And these are fascinating me since the levels look so familiar, but play differently. There is so much to study. There are definitely new winning and losing algorithms which have just been created and involve the jelly fish. These are distinct from the old algorithms, which many of these levels still have. I have also noted some that switch from the old to the new win/lose algorithms in the last five or so moves.

This latest episode has actually been enjoyable to play!

I note that the first legendary level is now level 147. I managed to pass it using the three starting boosters and avoiding to make any matches involving jelly fish. This way I had the old algorithm, luck plus strategy and passed on my final move.

The "super hard" levels of the episode I also found easy to pass with just starting boosters.

This episode was fun! But to get the fun versions I definitely tried to avoid the jelly fish. I turned off hints as well now because the hints just want me to make jelly fish all the time!

Those days might be over. In my second test game I also get the same free boosters as I got in the first, though at slightly different times. This time the win streak showed up together with the episode race like usual (maybe the lack of a win streak in my first game was a glitch), so I made it to level 72 until I got blocked. Then again at level 75. When the daily treat machine showed up I got 5 minutes UFO! That was at level 72 after losing all my five lives. So this new version is definitely trying to train players into using boosters.

Moreover, the algorithms are new. The levels look identical to the familiar ones, but the algorithms for the pass/fail/near miss trilogy are brand new. These first two episode races are just a jelly fish bonanza. This new version of Candy Crush wants us to use boosters and it wants us to create and use jelly fish. Cascades and old fashioned combos are out, jelly fish are in. Either the fish will get those last few jellies or frostings in the last few moves, or they will leave you one jelly short.

Not much fun, but I'll stick it with this one for now so I can see how things develop and if I get a gold bar cap.
