As a general rule, you should not buy extra lives. Your gold bars are better spent on extra moves. Instead of buying lives, you should send friend requests to the players under "People who send lives" in the Friends tab. Add plenty of friends, send plenty of lives, and send requests for lives. Eventually, your life stockpile will start to increase. You can use up to 20 extra lives from friends each day.
It is possible to reach the end of the game without ever spending real money on anything. You just have to be resourceful with your gold bars and boosters. You'll also usually have to limit yourself to one or two episodes per day; timed boosters from the Daily Booster Machine tend to expire by then. Besides, it's easy to lose focus and start making more mistakes than usual if you play for a long time in one sitting.
I am currently on level 6531 with over 25,000 gold bars and tons of boosters, and I have never spent money on this game. However, the game does get more difficult as you reach the end, and I'm not even a third of the way through the game.
I currently hold a streak of +4000 and a gold balance of over 8700.
Yes @LiliMarPR there are plenty of people that complete levels without buying anything.
I have managed to get to level 7745 without using money.
You do need boosters and gold, but you can obtain these from using various features of the game.
With regard to lives try to resist the urge to play for a long time. Once you have used your five free lives and the twenty lives you obtain from friends then stop playing. Don't fall for the pressure of running out lives as the reason to buy lives, or anything else for your game.
