The game lets me play on but doesn't ask if I want to pay and its charging my credit card without permission
Hi Paula. The app always prompts you if you want to continue and will show a gold bar price to do so. If you don't want to spend any money don't buy gold or make any purchases. Typical purchases would be lollipops, extra moves at the end of a level if you have failed, and entrance into a new episode if you don't want to ask friends or wait for three days.
The only way I know of that the game would charge your credit card (and this has been my experience with all King games) is if you select a gold bar package to buy in game extras. This would bring up a pop up and ask you to confirm before you went on.
