My friends never receive my requests for help to the next level. A box used to come up saying that I was sending a request--now that does not appear.

The dialog box only appears the first time you send help to a friend.
Instead I suggest you re-install the app on Facebook (remove it, then add it again)
Another option is to play Candy Crush on King.com - https://king.com/play/candycrush
You can synchronize your progress between Facebook and King.com by follow the steps on this thread:

Unable to purchase
Anyone else have an issue with the booster wheel not letting you spin? Mine says come back in xxx hours for the next spin, but the next spin never comes. I am so stuck on level 7280 and I need some booster help!!
