Ah yes, that doesn't work to exit once you are on the claim screen. I have fallen foul of that myself so many times with timed boosters. It is awfully annoying. You need to avoid going into the claim screen in the first place. Once you're in "events" you can see if it's ready to claim, so get out at this stage, by going back to "map".
I thought so I didn’t press claim I had it waiting on the screen to press claim so I exited the game and when I came back it was gone from the screen.
No, they don't let you do that. You need to be careful as to when you claim your reward. You don't have to press "claim" straight away, so the trick is to wait until you have enough lives.
