When i rank up, i never get the five extra lives, why?

I have never gotten extra lives when I rank up.

    If your lives are full, I think you will not get them because max.number of lives is 5.For example:If you have 4 lives, you ranked up, got "5 lives" but only 1 is added and the rest are gone.Maybe someone knows better than me.
