A couple weeks ago I lost the ability to see my "friends" scores on the left side of the screen and therefore am unable to send them lives. I am able to receive lives.

The score board has been removed for some players with a new update in the game, i.e. the top list will not be visible and the score board will be removed for all players in the future.
In this case you will not be able to send Lives to a friend from your top list and you will need to access the Lives inbox to exchange Lives.
