I'm so bummed. One of the things I look forward to after finishing the latest levels is the star tournament. All I see at the end is new levels coming soon. Is the star tournament gone?

Strange things happening to the HTML version: no new level beyond level 16325, even less than the FB version, no Star Tournament either:
Yes, that all hits the mark with your analysis and makes sense. It's a bit like the episode race and Candy Royale then in the way it's set up, just 400-500 stripes being the goal instead of playing an episode in 24 hours or passing a certain number of levels on your first try. I do like the event, it's a good way to collect some boosters just playing an episode.
OMG @MonicaYellow 15 minutes of party poppers? I am so jealous! That would cover one entire episode for me. I thought 10 minutes was the top reward out there. How divisive this game has become. Maybe it's because you're not allowed to compete in All Stars though. You need some perks to make up for that.
How I think the event works
So I had two today. The first one the second place player was at about 450ish.
The second one actually occurred in the late 400 so there were some very nasty levels to deal with and my collection was fairly slow. The "other players" never jumped very far ahead of me and stopped at around the 45 minute mark. I was actually behind but the "other players" after 45 min never went past the 170 they were at. I was able to end up around 210ish and they never collected another candy.
Basically this is just a free hour of play time and some boosters wrapped in a pseudo event.
The first few were just normal candies, the new one is striped.
Also not just 15 min you get a UFO as well. Way better rewards.
Beat the Buffet: The 1st time it rolled out in Feb, the scores of my 3 accounts were in the thousands range
The last few were in hundreds only
Sam's Streak, Party Booster for my current race is up to 15min.
It used to be only 10 mins

12 episodes in 1 or 1 and a half day is still admirable. So happy for you with all goodies and gold bars. I think I enjoy playing side games more than any big competitions. More relaxing and fun that way.
I get Beat the Buffet as well today, and Sam's Streak has just started. I find Beat the Buffet a strange event: Have any of you guys ever had a version where the score to beat was not in the 450-475 range?
Ya it was around 600 or so for the last one I had on mobile.

Val's account has quite a few concurrent events for collection of boosters, in addition to Champion Race for gold bars.
So far only played for 2 episodes and have these:
Egg Hunt Collection (8600 orange eggs) for quite decent boosters, including 2hr-timed Color Bomb
Hungry Hatchling (Legendary)
And not to forget Sam's Streak
Still get 45 on the win app. So at least that change has not gone there yet.
Ya super curious to see if everything works this week. I hope so but I am not holding my breath haha.

Thanks @MonicaYellow. Wow three party boosters that is generous, but 12 Episodes is too many for me. I can just about manage an Episode a day, but not always.
I got the 5 Episode version, but because I received it on Friday and I don't get time to play Candy Crush over the weekend I didn't even complete one Episode.
I must admit I do wonder if this new feature is the reason King reduced the Championship Race/Episode Race gold bar rewards.
Infinitely better version.
Wasn't keen to play 12 episodes in one day, but the event actually lasted for more than one day.

One account (at level 7000+) got the Episode Grand Prix yesterday, just completed it.
At first glance I thought it's 3 UFOs for the final bundle of rewards, King couldn't be so generous??! What a pleasant surprise. Added bonus: in the process I got 50 gold bars from side event.
Unintentionally crossed milestone level 8000 and got bundle of rewards.
What a day.
On the 22nd, 23rd, 24th? Mine did not pop but it would have been on the 23rd based on level 200 when my streak changed to the normal one.

They also added a gumball machine starting at 186, still seems to be there at 300+
