The new font is more legible, but it doesn't look good to me. The digits just look like they belong to a different font. The previous font had a problem with 3 and 8 being too similar and hard to discern in small sizes, so it needed tweaking. However, the new digits are hideous. They are also difficult to read in certain places, such as bomb timers, as they are too large and do not fit in the clock faces. Normally, the UI would have to be redesigned if the main font was changed to a different one with different size and proportions. But King just used a new font with the old UI that does not fit, making everything look sloppy.
