I used to feel the same way as you, but now I realize that it may not be their intention to ask without giving in return.

You see, the system works in such a way that you can request lives from all your friends in one click. However, to send lives to your friends, you need to do it one by one. Unless you are on their list of "Besties," not many will go through the hassle of sending life one by one to hundreds of friends.

If you still decide to delete those friends, these are the steps:

1. Click on "FRIENDS" tab
2. Click on "List" tab
3. Scroll to locate the friend and click on it
4. Click on the "-" on the top left corner
5. Click "Yes" to unfriend

You can search for your friends to ask for lives, but you can't search for them to send lives.

That's why I feel that the "Check all" option to ask for lives is not a good idea unless it's "Ask + Send" lives.
