Great explanation on auto hint. I agree totally in the higher levels it can be very deceitful.
If the game wants us to pass the hints are very useful. If we are meant to fail the hints do not help but may lead us to the intended outcome, such as leaving us one UFO short.
I find they speed up my game because on an easy board the hints often help me spot the next 4match or combo more quickly than if I have to scan the board myself, so it speeds my game up.
For inexperienced players the hints will help them make the best possible initial moves on lucky boards. Those not yet experienced enough to spot a lucky board may miss their chance to pass if they don't spot when the game is trying to help, and following the hints when stuck on a level for a long time can help.
Usually the hints no longer show the best moves for the last few moves of a level.
In the higher levels hints often deliberately mislead the players, on the lowest levels hints are usually very useful.
