Pin Sparks

Just wondering if anyone has figured out exactly what the pin sparks are and when best to use them. I currently have 52 out of 135 sparks and 33 pin sparks (duplicates) so I can open the first chest. Has anyone opened a chest yet? I'm wondering if there is a strategy and since it's such a new feature maybe some of the testers have advice. For instance…if it gives you a limited booster (5 mins or so), does it make sense to take it prior to a legendary level.

I think it makes sense to wait until you have 80 sparks to go for the big chest, since that one gives you a guarantee of a pin you don't have yet. That's obviously the only guaranteed way to eventually get rare pins, so it seems like it's worth it to always wait if you can. And I would think the way to go there is to wait for a while before doing that at all - just save sparks like crazy until the last week or so. That way you can collect all the easy pins first, and the big chest will give you a hard-to-get one. I assume the time to get smaller chests is for the very last sparks you use, when your time is about to expire, to use up the last sparks that you have before they go away.
