it puts me in the same board - I can quit and then advance but it then penalizes me a life. Why is this happening more and more?

Is it Candy Crush Saga you are playing? If so, which device are you using?
First of all, please make sure that you have the latest App version and your device is updated to the latest software version! If nothing made any difference, I would suggest you to contact the King Player Support team directly from your game App.
