What happened to candy crush?

I know some people might call me a hater, but honestly, I’m not.

I loved this game — it was my escape whenever I felt sad or depressed. I used to play it day and night, all the way up until 2021.

But after that… something changed.

First of all, they replaced all the iconic sounds and music — the ones that made Candy Crush feel so special — with cheap, generic ones. I still don’t understand why they did that.

This game was never meant to be some historical, meditative experience — it was fun, colorful, and full of personality.

Second, the levels have become so easy that they barely need any skill or strategy.

I remember when King.com was still around and I’d play the Flash version — it was challenging, exciting, and rewarding. I really thought it would always be there for when the mobile version went downhill. But Flash ended, and sadly, they never recreated that magic in HTML5.

I just want to know — why did all this happen? Why completely change such a beloved game in every possible way?

Hi @arminahd Most people here seem to blame greed and the desire for King to make profit as the demise of this game.

Like you I have been around to witness all these changes and I think the answer is a little more complex. All the changes of the past three years that I have studied and analysed seem to be geared towards making the game simpler, more streamlined and more controlled in nature. King have increased the game's control over the outcomes of levels/boards (which is why we notice that the strategy/skill element is gone) and over the outcomes of events. Why exactly King management decided that they want to or need to have total control over our gaming experience I am not sure about, but that is what has been happening over the past few years. My guess is that it is a cost cutting/profit making exercise while the company has replaced human level designers and other staff by AI and computer programmes.

There may also be a drive to make the game more accessible to players from lower income countries and parts of societies worldwide who all have mobile phones but not much else. Maybe the game has been changed to appeal to the growing markets in Asia, South America and Africa where almost everyone now has mobile phones and internet access. It's a shift away from middle class Americans playing on their PCs and towards these new growing markets. But that's my guess, King don't share their reasoning.
