How does Spearmint Snowstorm work? What are the mechanics to release the sprinks?

I find this event confusing and am not sure if it following any rules. Please could someone clarify what makes the sprinks come out of their icy cages and if this event is actually functioning the way it is meant to? The problem I see is that if I match three of one colour next to their icy cages nothing happens, but then I match three of a different colour next to them and one dragon gets released. I don't get it. Is this event functioning correctly?

Example, looking at the middle ice box:

I make the blue match below them and nothing happens. The box looks exactly the same:

Now I make the red match next to them and one gets released:

None of this makes sense to me. Any ideas how this works anyone?

Does this mean that @シリンダーノット is correct and it actually takes two matches to free a sprink @QueenB ? The phrase 'don’t always free a sprink' is a bit unclear to me.

@christinewupp This is where the confusion might come from. The tutorial says “match next to frozen sprinks,” but it doesn’t clearly explain that the ice only reacts to direct hits.

In practice, that means:

Simple colour matches next to the ice don’t always free a sprink
Matches that create an effect (like striped or wrapped candies, or Colour Bomb combinations) work because they actually hit the ice

So the event is behaving as intended, but I completely agree that the tutorial doesn’t make this distinction clear, which makes it feel inconsistent when playing.

I’ll make sure this feedback about clarity is passed along. Thanks again for helping surface this 🙏

Have you seen Sprinks' Nests lately in the game @シリンダーノット ?

From my experience, it seems to be two matches per Sprink in a way similar to the Sprinks' Nest. However, the CCS Wiki states that the ice blocks only require one match per Sprink, but that's accurate as of last year's Spearmint Snowstorm. They might have changed the ice to require two hits per Sprink, but the lack of visual feedback makes this harder to see. I'll do some more testing in a few hours.

Hi Christine, I am not sure about your game but in my game to release the sprinks I usually had to either use a wrapped near the ice cage or a stripe hitting the ice cage to release all the sprinks, if I matched colours near them nothing happened. 😊
