This can quite easily happen when the frosting in the middle column is being destroyed and the dragons are close by, which is probably part of the design of this level.
To avoid this, try making matches underneath the dragons while hitting the frosting as little as possible until both dragons have reached the bottom row.
If the dragon still ended up in the middle column, try to create the position similar to the one shown below, with two candies of the same color on one side of the dragon and one on the other.
Here I have two purple candies on one side of the dragon and one more on the other. I can now match those purple candies while pushing the dragon sideways to the position over the portal.
It is possible to move the dragon from that spot in the middle column by either using this method or the switch hand booster. It won't move from there on its own.
