I learned a lot about how the app functions from my All Stars journey. So here I will share my findings.
The first important message to all players is this:
The app controls everything !
Everything in Candy Crush is manipulated by the app that runs the programme.
- Level difficulty
- Difficulty is pre determined and set by a computer
- Whether you will pass or fail on your first attempt is written into each level and depends on which starting boosters and win streak boosters you have on the opening board. Some levels are in fact easier to pass without any boosters (so serve as win streak blockers), some are only passable with starting boosters plus win streak boosters, some are passable with 5 extra moves, some are only passable with more than 5 extra moves, some are passable with 5 extra moves plus one lollipop etc.etc. All of this is written into the game.
- The labels are mostly accurate but can be misleading
- Level difficulty is adjusted and changed every few days by the AI
2. Events
Different groups of players see different events in the game. These are called "test groups" by King.
All events are illusions
- Other players you see on leaderboards are either recordings (Episode race, Candy Royale, Factory Frenzy) or
- real players picked especially for you to compete with in a bespoke manner: The opponents you see are matched to your own game, crushing style and ability ( Weekly Contest, "live" leaderboard competitions) and are probably controlled by a time delay system to slow them down or speed them up to match your own ability and speed
- The game sets you specific tasks and rewards which are predetermined by the app: e.g. number of levels you have to pass to reach a podium slot in the Weekly Contest, amount of gold you can win if you pass Candy Royale, time in minutes/days you have to win the Episode Race. All these are pre determined and written into the app when you start to play the event
Features and events
- Features in the game keep changing with time. Events come and go. Nothing can be relied on to be permanent.
- The app controls which features we see in our games and players have no control over this
- Ads for free boosters or extra moves are only added to some accounts. Players who made purchases with real money do not get to see any ads features.
- The app determines which features and rewards you receive in response to how you play: Events and features are bespoke.
- The app seems to give out just enough of these rewards in events and features so that a good player who understands how to use boosters and gold wisely (as pre determined by the programme) is able to keep going without spending any money. This way the makers of the game can continue to claim that the app can be played without payment. (This claim is true and I will try to show you how to do it later in this thread)
3. The app tries to manipulate you at all times
- by giving you timed boosters to encourage you to keep going when you are about to stop or weren't intending to play for long (e.g. from Daily Treat Machine that pops up as soon as you open the game)
- by giving you challenging opponents in events to make it hard for you to beat the player in first place
- by making you want to keep your win streak with features such as the super charger and Candy Royale. Keeping a win streak is a very costly way of playing compared to other methods!
- by offering you rewards along the way to keep crushing for longer than you should (e.g. fishing boat when you run out of lives)
- by making you think you are an especially skilled player by giving you tasks and opponents you will find easy to beat
In order to beat Candy Crush and enjoy playing the game without any payment: Take note of the points I made above and then read my tips that will follow in the next posts.
Candy Crush is not a bad game and it can be enjoyed, so long as you realise that the app controls everything and that everything in this game is an illusion. The skill is to outplay the app and to stay in control.
