I can't progress past level 12440; the help I was getting is no longer available, and I'm being asked to make a purchase, but I have no way to do so.

I am sorry to hear that you are not able to pass level #12440! If you do not like to make a purchase to win it, please don’t and there is no need either!
When we are stuck on a level, after some tries, game keeps sending an easy board for us to beat and move forward! Keep trying until you get that easy board. Just use only the available lives and do not spend any lives that are received from your friends.
In the meantime, keep accumulating boosters from all the features that are available in your game - Daily Retreat, Booster Wheel, Sweet Cinema, etc., etc., (I would have added Chocolate Box, but the Gold Bars reward was taken out from it! I do not see any point in spending time on the feature now)!!
Accumulate all the boosters and face the level. Use your boosters only when you are closer to beating it! I am sure with all these preparations, you will beat the level soon!🤞🙌
