I'm afraid that for what I can see you were granted the gold bars from staying on top. The issue might be that you did not get a notification about it (but the gold bars were added). If you have the issue again in future events I suggest you take a screenshot of the number of gold bars before and after so that we can compare. I'm sorry but according to our data, it all seems to be working fine.

I was dethroned. When I went to collect, I was not given any gold before the event ended.
The only way of earning Gold Bars is by staying on the throne. Depending on the time spent on the throne before being dethroned you would get more or less Gold Bars. You would get those gold bars accordingly the moment you're dethroned.
That's currently the way the event works. I hope I was of help! :-)
