Level 1942

i am getting extremely frustrated with level 1942.  I’m finding it nigh impossible to get the jam to spread with only 30 lives.  I’ve watched it on you tube and it seems the player manages to “magic” extra lives s from somewhere.  I love playing this game but I’m coming to the end of my tether with this level. Any ideas please?
