For the first time I received a notice about finding a key to unlock something before the butterfly disappear. Where do I look for the key? 
Is it in the level I’m on or somewhere else?

I want to clarify that the only way to get the key is to continue playing through the levels. If you look at your game map, you should see the key laying somewhere on the pathway ahead of you. You must complete all of the levels before that key in order to claim it. There is a time limit however (I think about 2 hrs) to reach the key, so if you don't get to it in time you will have to wait for the event to restart.
