When I sign in to play I can't always come back in 4 hours. when I do get back, quite often the second booster is XXX marked out. Why ??

I think you are referring to the Daily Bonus where you could claim an extra bonus after 4 hours, like the image below. However, this is only available for a short time. In the image below, the 2nd booster is only available for 40 minutes after 4 hours. Would you e.g. log in again after 5 hours, the timer will be reset

Do you mean timed boosters? Unfortunately timer can't be paused
