I agree with you totally. This is not a fair competition. The most unfair part is some players have only three matches. They are not need to enter quarter final. They can enter to semi- final from qualifying directly. Other players have to use four weeks to compete against their opponents.
As this competition have two different completion dates, it creates two kinds of players.
1. 3 matches players -- lucky players and
2. 4 matches players --unlucky players
Different timezone is Ok. Because when you are playing the game, they are in deep sleep also. All participants have same time frames

Alas, it's hard to be completely fair, and some players don't even have a Gold Cup.

Yes, it's hard to be completely fair. But the studio can do something to minimise the unfairness. For example, every player has to compete in 4 matches for the same grand prize
