How to trigger bottles to pop (advanced levels) and what do the symbols mean?

I'm on Level 3527, and you'd think by now I would find a rhyme or reason for what triggers the bottles to generate. I can't tell what the symbols at the top of the columns represent (like showing striped candies for some and odd symbols for others). It's common for me to lose a level despite plenty of plays left just because there are no bottles to pop. HELP. My laptop app version is 1.288.300.0. My Androidd phone shows 1.288.3, which I assume is the same.

The Pop the Bottles levels sometimes have a specific place that generates the bottle, but for some it's usually that they appear from the bottom or the start of the flow. So if you match candies, and all the candies move to the right, then the start should be to the left.

It seems here that the bottles are generated in the bottom left, so if you match candies on the bottom left column, new bottles should appear there. So focusing on on the bottom section and especially the bottom left should help you here.
