Do you mean you see a grey box with your friends in it and above you see a text that you don’t have enough friends to play with? Like this?
This is because your friends are already playing or because they’re on another difficulty group, sorry. I have the same notification.
Unfortunately I don't have any person to select, all persons displayed are gray and I cannot select anyone. Unfortunately, this is the second time in a row that this has happened.

I checked, and the difficulty has to do with how many stars you have to collect to pop a bubblegum ball. Players will be randomly placed in different difficulty groups by the Game Studio.
Unfortunately, you have no influence on which group you are assigned to.
we could play together before and now all of a sudden i can't invite you anymore. where can i find the difficulty?

Sorry to hear you can’t play with your friends. We just heard it is only possible to play with friends who are on the same difficulty.
In your case it could be that your friends are either already playing Rescue Buddies or your friends have a different difficulty level.
