No. when you pick 4 friends, you just need to wait for them to play new levels. When they play new levels, they gain shipmates points.

These points are sent to whoever has picked them as teammates, so you. You know you've received those points or help from your crew when you finally have ammunition to shoot your cannon and have a chance to sink your opponent's ships

You can tap on the orange bell and send your crew a notification that invites them to play levels because you need their help.

while this goes on and you deal with ships to sink, other players, who have nothing to do with your crew, might have picked you as a member of their crew. In that case you might receive a notification that invites you to play new levels and gain shipmates points to help those players
