Why aren't the onions created grassy "clean" spaces?

Farm Heroes Saga - used to use the onion to make safe zones to clean veggies/fruit, but now they just move, do nothing to help.  What am I doing wrong?

Which level are you playing in Farm Heroes?

I've played most of the levels available but I don't recall any levels where the seeds (onions) didn't grow into grass.

Let me know and I'll check the level for you.
