What is the green + booster for?

I'm using the shovel and the whatever-it-is running to get me out of tight spots. There is, however, a little green plus sign that has a number in it that doesn't seem to do anything. I press it and the number is reduced by 1. What is it for and how do I use it? Thanks?

I believe it adds points to your vegetables and fruit so when you match them, you get more.
