When selecting companion, what´s the difference between a cracker and a producer?

When selecting companion, what´s the difference between a cracker and a producer? How does this selection influence the game play?

The game will select what you need. You then hover over the card for info as to what it does and make your selection. The producer gives you extra of the crops you need. The cracker will also crack open an egg. (a spade will do this also if you smack the egg)

These are still new to FHS so have not had a chance to use them yet.
