The same thing you described happened to me as well. There was a display in the middle of the game going in circles trying to connect after I clicked to claim the gold bar. I thought I had lost the gold bar and decided to give it up by exiting the game completely. Well, lo and behold when I opened it up again the gold bar was awarded and there were no problems with the game. I have had no issues since that occurrence and hope this information helps.
