Do crowns help in levels requiring a certain amount of letters?

Level 131 of AlphaBetty requires 4,7 and 9 letter words. In the past crowns made a word longer but it is not doing so on this level.  Am I mistaken that the crowns should make a word longer, such as a four letter word with two crowns equal a six letter word?

That doesn't help, sorry. I know how to play the game. Level 347 has become one that I can't pass. I guess I will just have to delete this game. I really hate that though, because I really enjoyed playing.
