I am on level 2463 & I've been playing for years. I’m having the same issue. I've spent so much money and lives, because I cannot find the ones I requested from friends. I wish more people would’ve gave more replies to your question

I basically do what Christine described in this thread. Method A is my preferred method, but my current strategy is closer to method D. I earned most of my gold from the Elite version of Candy Royale, and I used to plan my entire game around it. Now I mostly make gold by filling chocolate boxes.

I personally find that maintaining long level win streaks is very expensive. I am on level 4,236 with over 15,000 gold bars and a ton of boosters, and my level win streak rarely exceeds 20.

I'm apparently one of the players in the 2-5% category that is in an experiment for swapping pins. It's very new and as of right now, I really dislike it. Supposedly if I have duplicate pins I can swap and get new pins. All I see are my duplicates disappearing making it almost impossible to obtain the chest for more cards and great boosters. I used to look forward to getting duplicates and now they're taken away.
