@greddycandy sadly the covid virus shut down the parade but luckily it is scheduled for this year! The numbers practice all year long just for this event. They do appear in other smaller events and celebrations but the new years day parade and competition is what they live for.
A little history on what is a mummer:
Summers can be traced back to the ancient greeks and the word number comes from the Greek word momus, which means satire or mockery. The old English have a word mommer which means mimicking, masking, frolic. Mummer history has its roots in Irish, egyptian and Italian culture.
People would dress silly and come to your door and perform skits on new years day. The idea was that the home owner would give them drink and food or treats. If you held back on the food or drinks these people might run through your house creating havoc.
Philadelphia Pennsylvania is an old city made up of immigrants from all over the world. These immigrants brought with them their mummery traditions and new years day brought out all the tricksters. In the late 1700 and early 1800 this involved the shooting off of guns and creating quite a ruckus. City officials grew concerned and felt that many people could become injured so they incorporated a designated route for the mummers to travel and create their silliness. The first official parade was established in 1901 but the unofficial parade began in 1860. Mummers aren't just a bunch of goofy guys dressed all silly, that are talented musicians and their music sounds a bit like polka music. Their customers are all hand made and take almost a year to create.

@rebelchild glad to hear your parade is back on. Sadly on my side due to covid 19 I doubt the Coon Carnival will not happen. I troops also practised throughout the year as well planning the new designs for their costumes takes a long time. Surprisingly these traditions form from sad situations, such as slavery, immagration & apartheid has all influenced the creation of the Coon Carnival.
