since last night's update i cannot open a level. i select a character and ir just says downloading in middle of screen.

I too faced the same problem after the update. Go to device settings and clear cache in CCFS app. Shut down your device for a couple of minutes and than restart your device and open game with net ON. You will be able to play with your favourite character.
