How can I access lives from friends when system will not allow it?

when I access my messages there is a red exclamation mark. The picture of my friend and what they sent me does not show up. I also cannot accept any of the messages.

I've had that when my game was out of sync with FB, if it's already connected, disconnect it and make a fresh connection again, hopefully that will do the trick!
