How is it possible so many players could all think that they won first place in the same contest?

I wrote here for the first time a day ago because I was notified that I had won first place in the Striped Candy contest but never received my prize. Since posting my concern about the prize, I noticed at least two other questionß from people who thought that they had won first prize in what appears to be the same contest. How is this possible, or is it the usual but goes un-noticed because usually there's no problem with the prize awards? Im also curious about why some people were told that their accounts would be checked but I wasnt even asked about my info? I put a lot of effort into that contest. I would really like some resolution
