Candy Crush on Facebook, performance is abysmal, the game is not playable

Playing Candy Crush through FB has become impossible for the last few days. The performance is absolutely terrible. It takes several seconds just to move candies. What is going on here? Playing on the Candy Crush site is not possible, as I am past the levels that are available there.

The problem is that I am at a level that is well past the levels that are available on Kingdom, so that is not an option for me.

FWIW, this appears to be a problem with Google Chrome. I tried MS Edge, but the graphics are completely messed up there. Switched then to Firefox, and it works well!
