I gave up in the end and deleted the app completely and reinstalled it starting again from scratch. It then worked perfectly up to level 21 when it then crashed again and was exactly the same as before. I play on an iPad Air.

As you have already uninstalled once. try checking device is up to date and has 2gb minimum free storage space, delete the app and then go to safari and delete the cache from here (important even thought playing through the app) then restart your device. Reinstall the game and log in to you account and see if this resolves your issue

Followed all instructions, have 9gb of storage left. Worked once and then crashed again. Don’t worry, I give up and it must obviously be something wrong at my end. Thanks for your help anyway.
