Why do I have to play over 350 games to pass a level?

I play Candy Crush on my cell phone and desktop over 100 times a day and have to play a couple hundred times before i pass the level. This past week my cousin Tracy passed 140 levels while I only passed 20. Also during the contest, my candies would change color while I am playing. I use a cherry bomb and nothing happens. I used a striped candy and then nothing happens? How can you have a contest that is so flawed? Sincerely Joe Sullivan
