Lives can also be lost through an update to the game, your own device or by restarting your device, which clears a certain amount of memory, depending on your device. We therefore recommend limiting the number of messages and lives that you save; a full mailbox can also affect the functionality of the game.
The Gold Bars do sync across all platforms in all games, but the Boosters do not sync between devices.

I finally got around to signing in to the game with my king email user information. My progress remained fine but I lost all the saved lives my friends have sent me and maybe gold but Im not sure.
@jkulb sounds like you have been playing without saving your game. This being the case this means that you were reliant on Kings servers to save some of your game information and your devices memory to save other aspects of your game information.
King's servers saves your level progress and your gold, all the other stuff is saved on your device. My guess would be that as you haven't saved before the process of saving caused your game to refresh/reset itself and thereby wiped out the memory of your lives.
