How do you do this event? I got a lot of stuff and then finally picked that monster dude and my only options were to continue with 60 gold bars or quit and lose everything...when does it end? Can you win the prizes without paying gold bars?

cotton candy climb is an event in Candy Crush Saga.
@ScoMax It's up to you to decide when to stop playing and collect rewards. But you have to stop playing before picking the Troll and breaking your winning streak. If you break your winning streak at that point you can decide either to quit and lose everything or restore your streak by spending gold bars. More infos here
Since it's Christmas today and the game feels like giving players some presents, you have a chance to collect some goodies in the event for sure. For one day there won't be Bubblegum Troll spoiling the fun and you won't lose the rewards so check that out 🙂
