Bored but addicted: experimenting with Candy Crush

This game is getting increasingly boring, but it has it's addictive qualities, so like many I like to pick up my device and play CC when I have nothing much to do. It's a hard habit to break. There is little point now playing the upper levels that are set up to block us and make players part with their money by frustrating us out of our wits. I don't have the patience for that.

Having found the lower levels of the game much more fun and relaxing, I keep starting new games, all of which I have found surprisingly different. Some games I get many more lucky boards on my first try than others. Some games I get blocked by level 225 (now the first legendary level) some I get blocked by level 240 or 255. After level 260 it usually gets easier when the bubble gum appears. ( Who doesn't love bubble gum!?)

I have last week recreated my Sunflower login to see how far I can get without spending any gold and just using my boosters given to me in game (fewer now, so having to use them wisely). This is what I got to so far since last Monday. I won the weekly race of course with a score of over 200. Ten episode races and 500 gold is a nice place to end this experiment and start a new one for the new week. (I'll save Sunflower to play on at a later date)

Anyone else want to join the research? @MonicaYellow maybe? I will make a note which levels start off with an obvious lucky board and which levels I cannot beat on my first try only using win streak boosters, and how long it takes to beat the first legendary level 225. Sunflower passed this only on the third attempt with starting and win streak boosters.

Let's keep crushing and learn how the game works. My guess remains that we all play a different game, right from the start. Hope to find some evidence.

@christinewupp Interesting post. Iam pretty sure there are multiple games available to different players. I know I rarely play a board more than once and most of the time without any additional boosters. I have always played the levels as soon as they are released on 2 accounts. My 3rd family account I just started recently so far no boosters needed and very easily passed but I am under level 4000 on that account. Even if you do the research on lucky board etc..how will this help players when there might be so many different games available to so many different players?Just wondering.

I'm doing it out of interest. It might shed some light as to how best to economise boosters. I think for example that starting boosters may be wasted on a win streak blocking legendary level, as the algorithm seems to be set to lose on your first try no matter what. I'd like to test that theory out. My only other game has no legendary levels, so I can't really use it to test this theory.

  • Interesting project, looking forward to your sharing the findings.

For me, I'll keep testing on Val's account, and would rather not to start another account from scratch.

    Current status:

Yes, not spending real cash on the game, but have been "converting" some gold bars "earned'' from Champions Race, Candy Royale (when available) + occasional events that gave out gold bars (no Weekly Race though). My bad, too generous with using boosters. Current stock of gold bars stands at slightly over 2000 only.

  • Christine are you downloading each new game you start from the same location? I know that on my original account I started via facebook when i linked it to my phone there are some differences between the 2 accounts even though they are linked. Season pass for example is not available to me through the Facebook game, but is through my phone. For those that do buy boosters they are about 10% dearer to buy through Facebook than a mobile device. I'm wondering if players are getting differences on levels depending on where they installed candy crush from. Is the windows app version different to ios or playstore & Facebook?

  • Interesting, thanks for sharing. I don't have Facebook at all. I play via King email login on Apple devices. I have three, so my main game (the horrible one at the end, which I might give up after level 15,000) is on the iPhone. My fun game is at level 1596 now and on the iPad , I actually do play sideways most of the time because I have the magic keyboard and can't stretch my arms without strain (Bring back landscape mode, PLEEEASE!) So my test games will be new games started on my old phone 6 that I only use for this and nothing else. I daren't risk getting my accounts merged again!

Your questions are good ones, but I can't test those I'm afraid. I have no Laptop or PC.

  • Thanks for sharing, I'll keep you posted. Echinacea is at level 1596 with almost 3000 gold. I am not playing entirely as King would intend on that one, hence I have a bit more gold than Val I guess, but I do spend some gold on boosters, too. Especially the striped ones you can't get elsewhere. Val might catch up, that will be interesting. Has she got Sam's Streak? I have since this morning.

  • Update on my experiments:

I spent the past week trying out a number of new games and taking notes.

One definite find is that new players are assigned either to a game with legendary levels or without. We know already, from a post by moderator Kiara_wael , that legendary levels are "confirmed" to be a (yes, yet another!) test feature in the game. However, it's not that simple of course, there are more than two versions of the game you can get assigned to. For example the level at which you get your free 50 gold bars or which events you play, and if you have ads in your game, are all different between each new login. However I did get two versions (amongst those with legendary levels), which were very similar, gave me lucky boards at roughly the same levels and held me up at the same, too. I had cleared the internet history and cookies between the two games and started them within a few days of each other, so it proves at least that lucky boards are a pre determined feature of the game, but we knew that anyway....

The general gameplay I found was that if there were legendary levels (starting with level 225) then the earlier levels up to level 200 are generally quite easy with lots of lucky boards. If there are no legendary levels (it's possible to scroll up to check as soon as you have played level 1) then the game gives you much harder earlier boards. So King are kind of right in claiming that the different versions are differently "balanced" and probably there isn't as much unfairness between players as some people would think!

Level 26 is typically one impossible to pass at first try this week. Other weeks I've got a lucky board on this one at first try. Why the change all the time? I've been wondering if the earliest levels get harder when there is a competition on and easier just before a competition starts. So the start of the apple autumn event sort up messed up my research I think.

So the only real lesson to be learnt is that the game is manipulated and pre determined. As for any patterns, there are some but they are complicated and not written in stone. It's recognising the patterns and playing with them that lets some of us still enjoy the game and win episode races. I will now continue taking notes with my two games (Sunflower and Echinacea, one with adverts and legendary levels, the other with no adverts and no legendary levels) and keep looking if I can come up with some general tips.

I might start posting some weekly tips from what I've learned in the future.

Enjoy your game, everyone and happy crushing!
