Usually when I start a new level I can check a box that sends lives to any friends on or above that level. That has disappeared. Do I have to request lives now to get them, and is this the beginning of phasing out life sharing all together?

If you are talking about the "Send Lives" button where we see our friends with the "high scores" at the bottom of the score board (like in below image👇️), it was removed by the Candy Studio!!
The only way to send Lives now is to click on your "Profile" icon - click on "Friends" - select each friend you would like to send lives to.
