You can remove your specific friend from your game and the steps are detailed below.
Click on your game avatar and go to Friends option.
Are you asking them for lives? If not, then it's possible they don't know HOW to give lives. King keep messing about with the way friends are added and lives are given. What you describe is happening to me a lot as well, and I don't care and still am happy to send the lives because it isn't costing me anything and because I always assume it's King's fault and not that the players are just mean or unfriendly.
