I was winning the race challenge to win 25 gold bars and was about to complete it with 2 more levels to go and it suddenly disappeared. Why is that ??

Is it the Pot of Gold event that you are asking about @123anastasiat
The Pot of Gold event is time limited so the most likely explanation for its disappearance is that you ran out of time
If you are asking about the Episode Race then if that has disappeared the most likely explanation is that you closed your game and reopened it. At the moment there is an issue that results in your events and features going missing. All you have to do is play a level and your missing features will reappear.

Just wanted to make sure that you are playing Candy Crush Saga! If so, I am not sure why it has disappeared while you were in middle of race! I would suggest you to report to King Player Support team.
